Summary

I used to think that the only way I could change myself was by being hard on myself. This led to a lot of self-criticism, as I tried to achieve very high expectations, and did not work well for me. I never would have believed that there was any other way, until now. I replaced criticism with compassion and can see how accepting myself led to actual growth. In this bite-sized episode I'm sharing two very personal examples of some tough things I've dealt with in the past and very recently where I could have had a lot of self-criticism, but instead fought for compassion. When we sink in shame and despair, we do not progress. I want to encourage you to show yourself compassion, and use the other progress principles we've discussed (curiosity and courage!) to open up your path towards deep and lasting change. You know, high expectations, lots of grit, an incredible amount of determination, which

was really validated me a lot.

But underlying all of that was the steady stream of self-criticism.

A little while ago, I shared a replay from an episode I was on with mindful art coach

The reason I'm bringing that episode up is, you know, I'll link to it in the show notes

1:15.1

for those who want more of the in-depth version of how compassion has changed my story,

1:20.3

but also it's because of this quote that they introduced to me that I was like, I wish

1:24.6

I had known this years ago.

1:26.9

It's from Carl Rogers, and he is one of the four fathers, I guess, or maybe I don't

1:32.4

know, four fathers, the right word, but the fathers of psychology, I guess, and this

1:36.8

is something that he said, quote, the curious paradox is that when I accept myself just

1:43.4

as I am, then I can change, unquote.

1:49.2

When I first heard that from them, I almost fell out of my chair because I've lived it,

1:54.6

but I never would have believed it before.
