Summary

Maybe you are like me and you thought systemic racism was mostly over after the Civil Rights Movement. Or maybe you still knew racism existed, but it was only happening far away and instigated by people who were nothing like yourself. But very likely, you are also like me, and have learned--both over time and especially the last few weeks--that racism is still very much part of our society today. I hope you tune in to this special episode, especially if this topic makes you uncomfortable. In it, I share an admittedly non-exhaustive, but still helpful, list of 3 things you can do when you don't know what to do about racism. And more importantly: please read, listen, and learn from the BIPOC women and their posts I've shared below. As you know we moved out of California into Utah into Utah to Utah and I am without my recording equipment but today's topic and

0:26.7

the discussion I want to have with you is so important that I needed to just

0:31.2

record this regardless of not having the fancy microphone.

0:34.0

So no music today, no ads, and definitely lesser sound quality,

0:39.2

but I hope that you still enjoy what we are talking about today.

0:43.2

So I want to cut to the chase right away.

0:45.8

You know, we live in a time right now

0:47.8

that I feel cannot be ignored.

0:50.4

And, you know, just like I could not ignore the realities of COVID-19 on this podcast.

0:55.4

I mean, can you imagine if I pretended that wasn't happening right now and I just had all

0:59.5

these episodes that didn't reflect real life, I also cannot ignore how those of us in the United States

1:06.6

and by extension around the world are coming face to face with the effects of systemic

1:10.9

racism. And it might have seemed like maybe it was still business as usual since I recorded my

1:16.7

episodes well in advance.

1:18.0

So just so you know, before this and after this there are going to be episodes that might not seem to relate to the time as much only

1:24.8

because you're recorded in advance.

1:26.2

But like you, like you, I have been so troubled and I've been so saddened by the suffering of minorities that we are seeing right now,

1:35.6

especially our Black brothers and sisters. And I want to do my part not to just mourn with those that mourn, but also to help change the pain that people are facing.

1:46.7

And like you, I have struggled to know what to do and what to say.

1:51.1

And I've been afraid that I'll make mistakes and navigate this in ways that are incorrect or even damaging.
