Summary

If the word exercise makes you squirm, it's time to let go of what it does, or doesn't, mean for you. And probably also, your excuses. Set aside the known health benefits, the aesthetics-only goals, and dig into how to put joy back into exercise. Because movement can actually help you manage your mindset. Christy Joy is passionate about exercise, but not in a drill sergeant type of way. She often works out alongside her four children, and recognizes that sometimes even if a minute of movement is all you get, it still matters. We even dig in to my own exercise story. I have navigated an obsession and then, due to injury, prohibition. She shares her methods for climbing out of the traps you've set for yourself around exercise. You know the ones...not enough time, can't find the right type, etc. And she motivates you with her idea that when you show up for yourself, and you do something difficult every day, you are more likely and more prepared to show up strong in the rest of your life. Christie Joy. I've ruined my IT band in college due to a running injury. But how the injury came about was

0:16.6

because I was doing what I call an angry run and I'm sure you know what this looks like,

0:21.6

where I was running as hard and as long as I could.

0:25.0

Now the reason behind that I think is especially relevant to this episode.

0:28.9

I had a recent slip-up in my eating, and I was so angry and so sad and devastated that I ran and ran to punish myself enough that I ruined my IT band and doing that meant that I then had to endure four years of knee pain

doctor visits, marathons cancelled and lots and lots of physical therapy.

0:50.3

Now while I thought that running was a huge emotional outlet, in general, if I was being honest with myself, I saw as the number one way to manage my weight, earn my food, and punish myself for being human. I hope that if you can relate to this you

know that you are not alone. Now I was so happy to really heal and my knee and

run almost every day for years later on.

Until I was told by a doctor almost four years ago

that due to the effects of childbirth,

I could no longer do any intense workouts of any kind,

but most especially running.

Now I was devastated, honestly, and I consigned myself

to walking the running trails

and swimming alongside all the senior citizens.

And by the way, I've actually made great friends with several of them.

But guess what I learned in the process of having this ability to exercise at such high intensity

taken away from me?

1:41.7

I learned I could still find joy even in my

super modified exercise. I actually look back on those restrictions as
