Recently for a couple of days, I felt horribly anxious. Not entirely out of the blue. I had some

stuff that happened a couple of weeks before that, but it was unusual. It was unlike me.

Business is going well. My marriage is good. My friends are great. Health is good. I kept thinking,

why do I feel this way? Why do I feel this way? Trying to pin it on something. Explain it away

and remove it quickly. And then I reminded myself that whatever we resist persists, whatever it is that we're

trying to get rid of, that we don't want, that we're thinking, I want you to go away,

leave me alone, leave me alone. It just sticks to us like Velcro. So I think to myself,

what if I just allow this feeling of anxiety? I don't know when it's going to be

over. I don't know exactly how I'm going to feel later today. Tomorrow I could feel this way.

Tomorrow I could feel a different way. But wise me, that wise part of me, does know that all things

pass good things, less good things. It's all temporary. And so I thought to myself in that

moment when I was having this reckoning, you know, part of me thought, oh my gosh, a glass of wine

might fix this, or maybe, I don't know, maybe I should buy something online that I've wanted.

Maybe, maybe, maybe. I know we chase those cheap little things that can

feel like pleasure, that can feel like peace, but they're not. There are a very cheap substitutes.

What I told myself, what I reminded myself of in that moment was, of course, yes, this feeling,

this emotion, this place where I am right now, it's temporary. I need to,

instead of chasing happiness, instead of chasing a feeling of lightness, of feeling better,

of joy, it felt too out of reach, I thought to myself, what I can chase instead in this
