Summary

There are some serious objections to Penal Substitution when it comes to the morality of punishing the innocent, the idea of forgiveness being accomplished through punishment and several other moral, philosophical and legal concerns. In this video I'm going to systematically deal with these straightforward objections to the logic of Penal Substitution. Check out the whole series on Penal Substitution to see the historical case for the church fathers holding to elements of penalty and substitution in the cross, the case for the OId Testament teaching PSA through typology, the Book of Romans and PSA, and how to unravel and disarm the constant rhetorical deceptions of that are most commonly labeled against the cross. biblically about everything.

0:09.7

Welcome to the Tuesday live stream.

0:10.9

Today we're going to talk about serious, I mean serious and sober objections to the doctrine of penal substitutionary atonement.

0:18.3

Not like last week when I dealt with ridiculous rhetorical nonsense and misrepresentations of the doctrine, but we're going to talk

0:24.7

about real objections, serious questions that sober-minded people have about how Jesus saves us

0:29.6

on the cross.

0:30.6

So here's a couple of the questions we're going to deal with. Let me give you a little preview of tonight's stream.

0:36.0

We're going to deal with, is it unjust for God to punish the innocent?

0:41.0

Therefore, how could he punish Jesus if Jesus is innocent? Wouldn't that be

0:46.0

unjust? Wouldn't the cross them be an unjust thing? Human law, here's another objection.

0:51.0

Human law knows nothing of dying in someone else's place when they have a death sentence and then you die in their place. Isn't that barbaric?

0:58.0

Another objection is if Jesus pays for my forgiveness, then it's not really forgiveness because it's been a debt has been paid, you know, whereas forgiveness would be cancelling a debt.

1:09.0

So that's not really forgiveness. That's another objection. Another one is how could Jesus pay our sentence in

1:14.1

one weekend when we have to pay for it for eternity? So how is it that this is a fair

1:19.2

exchange where Christ is dying for me in my place.

1:24.0

So maybe you're like, what is penal substitution anyways, Mike, what are you talking about?

1:30.0

And that's the question, right?

1:32.0

Is penal substitutionary atonement the right,

1:36.0

that's the right understanding of the cross,

1:38.0

but is it like logical, is it rational,

1:40.0

and can it withstand sort of philosophical scrutiny?
