Summary

In this episode, I work with a man who’s been married for 42 years. He wants to be more assertive and provide more direction in his relationship, but is struggling with long-held feelings of low self-worth, fear of failure, and more. What’s behind all of it? Listen through to the end. Every so often, I bring on an anonymous guest for a completely free shadow work session. I make this part of the podcast to help destigmatize mental health work and give back to my community. If you or someone you know would be interested in being an anonymous guest, DM me @mantalks on Instagram, or send an email to info@mantalks.ca. Did you enjoy the podcast? All right, team, welcome to another installment of the anonymous guest episode, The Man Talk Show.

0:18.5

I'm Connor Beaton.

0:19.9

And my guest today is trying to find a little bit more

0:25.6

resemblance of confidence, direction within his marriage. He's been in a marriage for a few

0:32.7

decades. And he has struggled to not only provide some direction for himself, but for his family,

0:40.3

for his relationship. And we talk a little bit about his background, his upbringing, you know,

0:44.8

his childhood and some of the circumstances that contributed to his lack of self-esteem,

0:52.4

self-worth. And where we end up navigating is interesting. And we end up

0:58.7

navigating to his relationship with God, not religion specifically, but with God as an entity.

1:06.8

And this is an interesting one in many ways because over the years of working with people,

1:13.6

I have found that many people that have grown up in very religious households

1:18.6

have a very specific relationship with God.

1:24.6

They have a very specific kind of dynamic, whether or not they continue to

1:31.0

practice that, that religion or be a part of that faith. Their relationship with God still remains.

1:38.7

There's still this connection to something that they experienced growing up. And unconsciously in the mind, we can hold a tremendous amount of resentment,

1:49.8

bitterness, animosity towards God for the circumstances and situations that we experienced

1:56.8

growing up without even knowing.

1:59.4

And so what you'll likely hear in this episode, as you track through the entirety of it,

2:05.9

is one man coming to terms with his frustration and anger towards his maker.

2:15.3

And this isn't in any way to talk about my affiliation or belief with God. That's sort of,

2:23.3

that's sort of completely separate. But I would encourage you to, as you listen to this episode,

2:29.5

notice the through line of where this conversation is going, right?
