A beautiful summer sunrise brought Gilbert to the spare room door,

where he gently woke Marilla to tell her the news.

Anne had given birth to a healthy baby boy in the night. They hadn't wanted to disturb anyone, as it had been much more straightforward than last time.

He was ten pounds, and they quickly named him James Matthew, after the two best men Anne had ever known.

Anne marvelled over his perfection and wondered over the little girl, Joy, who would have been one year old by now.

Leslie was in awe of him and came to see him regularly.

Miss Cornelia nursed him like any good grandmother would,

and Gilbert was the proud father you would expect.

Miss Cornelia also informed Dan that Owen Ford had written to ask if he could board with her in a few months,

and they hoped this would align with Leslie and her plans to go to Montreal to study nursing.
