I'm Ellie Corthororn. To pave the way for human space travel, since the 1940s, a menagerie of animals have been sent into space, including chimpanzees, dogs, and even two tortoises who orbited the moon.

However, many of these animals were put under extraordinary amounts of stress and some lost their lives.

Section editor Riannon Davis spoke to Stephen Walker,

an author whose books have covered the space race

about this tragic and forgotten side of space exploration.

So Stephen, what was the first animal that was sent into space, and when was it sent?

Actually, the very first animal that was sent into space was in 1947.

It was a fruit fly, actually a series of fruit flies, that were put in the nose cone of American-built,

reconstructed wartime German V2 rockets.
