I'm Mick Garrus, and this is Postmortem.

Back when movies were relatively young

and the major studios were establishing themselves,

each of them carved out a genre or a style that represented it.

Unlike these days, when the studios really don't have individual identities.

Warner Brothers made gritty, timely, violent crime dramas

with the likes of James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart.

MGM made big-budget, big-star glossy musicals

with color and grandeur from their vast carousel of huge stars.

And then, of course, there was Carl Lemley's Universal Pictures.

Though now their studio is geographically the biggest in the world,

if not in terms of box office these days.

They were scrappier, more willing to dip their toes into the blood and muck,

and became famous for their classic monsters.
