Summary
Grant Fisher holds American records, world records, and an Olympic medal. He's arguably the greatest American distance runner alive—and he's only 28.
But the story that shaped all of it almost didn't happen. His college coach sat him down junior year and asked one question: how much do you actually care about this? That conversation changed everything.
Then, before the 2024 Olympics, Grant did something most athletes never do at the height of their power: he blew it all up. New coach, new city, new training. Complete blank slate.
So what drives a man who already has the records to rebuild from scratch? What does it feel like when you can't force the magic; you just have to be ready when it comes? And how does one of the most honest athletes in the sport sit with the tension between peak performance and knowing the window is finite?
He's 28, at his absolute best, being chased by a new generation of Americans who want what he has, and in this conversation, he holds nothing back.
This is one of the most honest conversations we have ever had with an athlete operating at the highest level of the sport.
This conversation is worth every minute.

If you're an American or you are a fan of track and field, you probably know who Grant is because he is one of the greatest American distance runners ever in the history of the sport of running, and he's only 28 years old. He's got a big career ahead of him, and he's got a lot of things left on his radar. But what's crazy is when he won an NCAA title as a sophomore, Coach Mill, who's been on the podcast many times before, sat him down, junior year and said, figure out how much you care about this running thing. That conversation led the American records, world records, an Olympic medal. Today, Grant opens up about the moment. He almost coasted through his own potential while why he blew up everything before the 2024 Olympics, new coach, new city, new training, complete blank slate, as he called it, and what it feels like when you can't force the magic, but you know you have to ride it when it comes. |

| 1:48.7 | All right, yeah, you're making me digging the archives here. |
| 1:50.8 | That was almost a decade ago now. |
| 1:52.8 | Yeah, Indoor Nationals that year had kind of been wavering through the season on what my priorities were. |
| 2:00.1 | And, you know, I was at a high-performing |
| 2:02.4 | school so the main thing pulling me at that time was school um I was in an I was in the engineering |
| 2:08.1 | department classes were really hard I was dedicating a lot of time to classes and trying to do well |
| 2:13.1 | in those and because of that running was taking a bit of a backseat, a little bit of a hit. And yeah, I hadn't performed very well at indoor nationals. And Coach Mill, I think he called me up. I don't think he came back to where I was because I was sitting with other athletes. And he called me up to where he was sitting. And we sat down and had a discussion. It was basically like, hey, man, you need to sit down and figure out how much you care about this running thing. |
| 2:37.7 | And if you do care about it, like I'm in it 100% with you. |
| 2:41.4 | But if you're phasing out of it, let's have that conversation too and see if we can make this work and find a good balance for you. |

| 3:01.2 | But that was the first time someone really sat me down and said, hey man, like think about |
