Summary

The FBI is undergoing a major shift with the appointment of Kash Patel as director and Dan Bongino as his deputy. Ravi kicks off the episode by diving into both men’s backgrounds and explains what their leadership could mean for the FBI’s operations, public trust, and national security. He then sits down with Dorsey Hopson, former superintendent of Shelby County Schools, and Sarah Carpenter, executive director of The Memphis Lift, to unpack one of the most complex school mergers in U.S. history. They discuss the political, racial, and socioeconomic tensions that shaped the integration of Memphis City and Shelby County Schools—and the rapid de-merger that followed. Dorsey and Sarah reflect on the challenges of leading through a highly charged educational landscape while striving to put students first, the role of school choice, and the importance of community and parental involvement in education. Welcome to The Lost Debata Show for Political Eclectics.

I'm Ravi Gupta.

And in a little bit, we're going to hear from Dorsey Hobson, who was the superintendent

0:08.6

of Shelby County Schools, which includes Memphis and its suburbs.

0:12.8

At a really interesting time when the district was forced to merge the suburbs and the city,

0:18.2

but then the state government basically gave the suburbs ability to go back to

0:23.2

running their own school districts. And at the same time, there was also a state takeover of a ton of

0:28.2

schools within the district. So he was in the middle of a lot of stuff. And he talks a lot about

0:32.2

how the job of a superintendent in many ways is, as I put it to him, an impossible job. And you can hear from

0:39.6

him there. He basically didn't disagree. And I think it, I think it's a dovetails with some of the

0:44.3

things that we've been talking about on this podcast about how pushing more and more control

0:48.1

locally to school leaders, parents, operators continues to be where a lot of my energy is within school system reform. Because if you

0:57.1

hear from people like Dorsey who are really well-intentioned, capable, talented people,

1:03.6

and they tell you what he tells us in this interview about what it was like trying to put

1:08.7

his arms around, the bureaucracy and the politics of running a school

1:11.7

district, you're left wondering, hey, is this really the best way to do things? I also use some

1:16.9

clips in that interview from a parent organizer named Sarah Carpenter. And so we get a lot of

1:22.8

perspectives there. And it's one of my favorite types of episodes because we hear from people

1:26.4

who actually do the work

1:27.5

instead of people like me who just talk about the work, right? And that's what makes a good

1:31.3

episode, I think. But before I get there, let's talk about some stuff that's in the news. And I think

1:37.4

we can begin with Cash Patel, who is confirmed by the U.S. Senate. And I've talked about
