The army veteran went to Ukraine to help them fend off Russia's invasion.

The retired army staff sergeant was in the eastern city of Bakmut for months, the scene

of intense warfare.

According to Ukrainian soldiers, Maimer died when the building he was in collapsed under

a barrage of Russian artillery fire.

A grizzly video was posted online by the Wagner group of Russia-aligned mercenaries claiming

to show the body of an American.
