Summary

Dimity talks to three generations of runners—Jane Espy, 74; Katie Oglesby, 48; and Abby Oglesby, 21—to get their perspective on how to help kids start and enjoy running.

The trio let us in on:

  • Why a 5K is a great place to get them started;
  • What to say—or not say—to a kid who is complaining on the run;
  • Why a parent's mantra should be no pressure;
  • And how modeling healthy behavior is the best influence of all.

Dimmity McDowell, co-founder of another mother runner. I don't know about you, but

my kids have plenty of time on their hands these days. School is out, most activities

are canceled or severely cut back, and well let's just say there isn't a ton of

1:32.0

I know. So you guys are all, give us a little background, you Katie and Abby live in Colorado, but you came down to Florida to get a little

1:40.0

sun and make sure everyone's good.

1:42.0

Yeah, I mean, I have not been working and the kids were having a hard time finding a summer job, so we just decided to go see grandma.

1:51.0

I love it. Okay, well well so let's start with your running

1:55.0

beginnings. I want you to take us each back to the days when you first

1:58.3

started running. So Jane at age 74 you were clearly running before it was the cool trendy thing to do.
