So what happens now? That's the question which can and must be asked on a number of different levels.

What happens regarding our culture? What happens within politics, what happens next in our justice system.

Are we entering or exiting a dark chapter in American political violence?

And part of the issue is that every person who just heard those questions is not the problem.

We don't need to be reminded that violence is not the answer.

We don't need to be told it's wrong to kill anyone except in defense of self or in defense of others.

We don't need to be told it's okay to disagree and still be civil.

The folks who need to hear it are right now in some echo chamber listening to people

who already agree with them or they're down some dark hole in an alternate reality behind the screen or

device which dehumanizes you and your thought process. We call it an alternative or alternate

reality, but in truth, there's just one reality and it's not found in video games or chat boxes or some group chat called Discord.

The people who need to hear the message aren't the ones listening.

And even if they were, we cannot make other people change.

We can pass laws that outlaw discrimination, but we cannot

pass a law that makes you love someone who looks different from the way you look. We can pass a law that

criminalizes assault, but we can't pass a law that makes you hug someone who's in need of a friend.

At some point, humanity has to kick in and supplement the void that the law leaves.

We can't stop people from saying vile, dangerous, and untrue things.
