0:33.6	Many news items have come into our view in the last week or so, and I want to bring you
0:40.3	quickly up to date, June 18th, 2025, a notice from the National Institutes of Health titled
0:48.1	Implementation Update, Terminating or Suspending Dangerous Gain of of function research in accordance with the executive
0:55.8	order on improving the safety and security of biological research.
1:00.1	Recall that one of President Trump's executive orders was to ban gain of function research.
1:07.7	That's creating pathogens of pandemic potential.
1:13.2	The United States, the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense is deeply into this as well as private foundations, including
1:19.0	the Gates Foundation, the Welcome Trust, and the Rockefeller Foundation. Well, this notice came through
1:24.9	following up on one of President Trump's signature executive orders.
1:32.6	And so this is how the notice reads.
1:34.5	The purpose of this notice is to inform the biomedical research community of the following actions
1:39.8	NIH is taking and requiring in response to guidance we see from the White House Office on Science and Technology,
1:48.5	pursuant to the May 5th, 2025 Trump Executive Order on improving the safety and security of biological research.
1:56.2	Consistent with the definitions provided in the executive order, effective immediately, NIH will,
2:02.4	one, terminate funding, and other support for projects, including unfunded collaboration projects,
2:10.4	meeting the definition of dangerous gain of function research conducted by foreign entities
2:15.3	in countries of concern or foreign countries where there is not adequate oversight.
