My name is Taylor Rockwell and this week, I'm assuming inspired by what a certain American has been doing in La Liga. We're talking American managers abroad, why it hasn't really worked, the reasons behind it, who might be the one to break through, if we've already seen the one to break through. Graham Ruffin, I am excited. Am I correct in assuming that a lot of this has to do with Pellegrino Matarazzo? That's right, yes. The greatest manager of all time, I think now he has that

0:42.2

title, yeah. He's earned that in nine games. It's like the opposite of Wilford Nancy.

0:50.3

That's flivorous. Poor Wolf. He'll be back at some point, just probably not in Scotland. But we are going to take a longer look at American managers who have coached in Europe. By my count, we have five, depending on if we're counting David Wagner in that list. What about you? I think we are, right? He played for the US. I know he's a dual national born in Germany but in a soccer sense I would count him as American I mean shall we go through the

1:14.8

straight off the bat shall we go off the through the list of top five it's a it's a short

1:20.5

list so we'll take too low it sure it so in the premier league three American managers coached

1:24.9

primary league club so bob bradley at swanzy Jesse marsh at Leeds David Wagner at Huddersfield as I said dual nationality but played

1:31.8

for the US so I count him and Pellegrina Matarazzo is the only American to have ever managed a

1:36.9

La Liga club he's a real sostad right now doing very well by the way and as Taylor says that's kind

1:42.0

of the inspiration for this episode he has he's unbeaten in nine games.

1:47.2

As Real Sostad manager, they're playing Real Madrid this weekend at the time of recording.

1:52.2

Seria, correct me from wrong, Taylor.

1:54.7

As far as I can see, there's never been an American manager in charge of a Seria team,

1:58.7

despite half the clubs being owned by Americans. And then in the Bundesliga we've had Mataratsso at Stuttgart and Hoffenheim, David Wagner has coached Shalka for a period as well. Jesse Marsh for a short period at Arby Leipzig of course. And then same as Seriafrilega and I couldn't find an American who has ever been in charge of a club there. So that is the list of we're talking about the top level, and we assume the big five leagues constitutes the top level. And then in terms of trailblazers, shall we say, I guess you could say Greg Berhalter, because he's in Scandinavia with Hammerby around 2011. Maybe David Wagner as well.

2:35.2

I think that's when he starts with Barizia Dortmund 2 is in 2011.

2:39.1

But it's a confusing one because, again, like Wagner, I wouldn't say is like coming up

2:43.6

through the U.S. system or anything like that, but has played for the U.S., so definitely counts.

2:48.1

But I'm not sure how many doors he was like opening for other American managers.

2:53.6

I feel like that person is Bob Bradley.

2:56.0

Like Bob Bradley is probably the one who got the opportunities and maybe did sort of crack

3:02.1

the door to the idea of an American coaching a team.

3:05.1

Yeah, I mean, in a lot of ways, Bob Bradley embodied the American coaching sphere at that time.
