So the world was supposed to end in 1916,

and then again in 1925 and again in 1942 and 1975 and 2000 and yet here we

are still around despite all those supposed Armageddon's.

All of those predictions of Apocalypse came to us courtesy of the Jehovah's Witnesses, who are politely described as a millenarian

restorationist Christian denomination with non Trinitarian beliefs

distinct from mainstream Christianity.

What this means in regular words is that these are not ordinary Christians,

and they don't believe ordinary things.

Blood transfusions, for one thing, are a big problem for Jehovah's Witnesses.

Amber Scora is a Canadian writer, now living in New York City, who grew up as a Jehovah's Witness,

and then left when she was an adult after spending years

preaching a gospel in North America and China. In a new book leaving the

witness recently excerpt it at quillette.com, Scora writes about the sad, funny, strange,

and fascinating world she inhabited as a Jehovah's Witness.
