down this world of plant breeding and today we're looking at specific varieties.

Adam Mosley's back, he is the research and new product developer at Pleasant View Gardens,

which is the home of proven winners.

And so there's probably a dozen of a particular basil that are growing in my

garden right now and that would be a mazel basil which is out of proven

winners and so I thought Adam it could be cool

to almost hear just the creation story

of this particular Basil, which has at least one

really interesting quality.

I think we touched on a little bit in one of the earlier episodes this week of just doing

that big germplasm screen looking for basal traits that would be interesting. Different

flavors there's a ton of different flavor profiles in basal. What was even more

depressing with really this downy mildew issue I mean it basically wiped out my entire trial field when I was in

college working on this in my graduate degree and when I took the look a real close

look at it there wasn't any real good downy mildew resistance in traditional

Italian basil and so what we wanted to do was to try and find maybe a different

species of basil something else out there that might have good resistance, but then also be able to hybridize with traditional osmomosilicon, which is a general name for basal.

So we started there with a lot of different options.

You know, you try a lot of different things

until you find one that works.

I think one thing about plant breeding is 99% of what you do is going to go in the compost pile.
