0:31.2	And so there's probably a dozen of a particular basil that are growing in my
0:36.9	garden right now and that would be a mazel basil which is out of proven
0:40.6	winners and so I thought Adam it could be cool
0:43.4	to almost hear just the creation story
0:46.3	of this particular Basil, which has at least one
0:49.7	really interesting quality.
0:54.0	I think we touched on a little bit in one of the earlier episodes this week of just doing
0:59.2	that big germplasm screen looking for basal traits that would be interesting. Different
1:04.2	flavors there's a ton of different flavor profiles in basal. What was even more
1:08.6	depressing with really this downy mildew issue I mean it basically wiped out my entire trial field when I was in
1:14.0	college working on this in my graduate degree and when I took the look a real close
1:20.3	look at it there wasn't any real good downy mildew resistance in traditional
1:24.8	Italian basil and so what we wanted to do was to try and find maybe a different
1:29.8	species of basil something else out there that might have good resistance, but then also be able to hybridize with traditional osmomosilicon, which is a general name for basal.
1:42.4	So we started there with a lot of different options.
1:46.8	You know, you try a lot of different things
1:48.6	until you find one that works.
1:49.9	I think one thing about plant breeding is 99% of what you do is going to go in the compost pile.
