Summary

Welcome to the December 2022 Ask Me Anything episode of Mindscape! These monthly excursions are funded by Patreon supporters (who are also the ones asking the questions). We take questions asked by Patreons, whittle them down to a more manageable number — based primarily on whether I have anything interesting to say about them, not whether the questions themselves are good — and sometimes group them together if they are about a similar topic. Enjoy!

Remember that I take a holiday break at the end of the year, so the next AMA will be at the beginning of February.

Hello everyone, welcome to the December 2022 Ask Me Anything edition of The Mindscape Podcast.

0:05.9

I'm your host Sean Carroll. I wanted to start off, I can't believe it's December.

0:09.9

This has been a long year. For me, I'm sure for you as well, had a book out,

0:14.7

changed jobs, moved across the country, even the move is not completely done yet.

0:18.6

We haven't actually moved into our official house. That's coming in a couple of weeks.

0:22.3

So things have been very hectic anyway all this year.

0:25.5

Been a very good year for Mindscape. I wanted to just share one very heartwarming story.

0:31.0

If you remember a year ago, last December, we had Joshua Green from Harvard on the podcast,

0:37.6

who is a psychologist and philosopher, moral psychologist, thinks about how deontology and

0:44.0

consequentialism play out literally in the brain. But he also is one of the brains behind

0:50.8

giving multiplier, which is a way to leverage two different facts. One fact is that certain

0:58.5

charities are more effective than others in changing lives and saving lives and making people healthy.

1:04.0

And the other fact is that we have certain emotional connections to certain charities.

1:08.8

You know, the local cat shelter is going to be an important one to me.

1:12.4

So giving multiplier makes it possible to do both. You can give money and you can give some to

1:18.7

your favorite local specific charities. And they will also spread some love to high-impact

1:24.6

charities that spend money on whatever the data says is the most effective way to do it.

1:30.2

So giving multiplier, when Josh came on the show, had a special deal for Mindscape listeners.

1:36.3

You can go still true, by the way. You can go to HTTPS, colon slash slash giving multiplier.org,

1:43.3

slash invite slash Mindscape. And you can donate and they will extra match. So there's a little

1:48.5

bit of extra umph to your donations. And this was a year ago and wait for it. We got $165,000

1:57.6

in donations from Mindscape listeners to giving multiplier. And Josh sent me the list of places
