The Michael Vary Show is on the air. Oh, When I was a young man and probably further into adulthood, then, well, when I was a younger man, let me leave it at that, I thought, I genuinely believed

that any talk about mental health was silly, sort of how I look at climate change wackos. I looked at it as the sort of thing that people

used as an excuse you should will yourself out of it and as I got older and older I had

friends some of whom I deeply admired some of whom I respected some of whom I respected some of whom I respected, some of whom I loved, and cared about, and I watched that

these were people who had every aspect of their life under complete control.

The kind of people I wanted to grow up to be like.

And I found that there was this thing that they struggled with.

And I realized that they weren't doing this for attention.

In fact, they tried to hide it.

And they weren't doing it because they were bored or they didn't choose this and

I watched and kind of went through it with some folks even even some folks that I cared about closely and communicated with often.

And I watched how it could be, you know, you could have nine days of up and one day of down and I knew they weren't

choosing this and so I would try to you know bull them out of it I would try to motivate them out of it. I would and I do think there is a

certain amount of the ability to do that, but there is a real thing in the same way that you can't

just choose not to have diabetes or you can't just

choose not to have a heart condition or lung cancer or whatever else. You can

affect it you can affect the treatment you can control it you can learn about it and

uh you can live with it you can live better with it but it's real and I do now know it's

real and I've spent a lot of time studying this both on people and talking to
