Chris provided research findings about these chemicals' effects on coral reefs and human health, recommending zinc oxide as a safer alternative. (00:14:00) Mineral sunscreens such as zinc oxide can be good, but titanium dioxide can be a concern. (00:15:00) Titanium dioxide is used in food and other products to brighten and whiten the product. Even in small particles, titanium dioxide can cause cancers. (00:17:00) Zinc oxide is the best bet. When do you need to apply sunscreen? (00:21:50) Reapply every couple of hours, at least. Chris presented research showing that dietary factors like beta carotene, lycopene, and vitamins C and E can enhance skin protection from UV damage. Vinnie shared anecdotal evidence about dietary changes affecting sunburn susceptibility.
