This is the illusionist in which I hellenzoltzman and dropping an extra special something into your feed to celebrate radio topias annual fundraiser.

I recorded it in front of a live audience at podcon in Seattle earlier this year. Podcon was this huge get together of podcasters and podcasters.

So I did this piece about a word that unites us all but attracts a lot of complaint as well. Here we go.

I'm here to talk to you about a word. A lot of people hate.

Podcas, make a noise if you dislike this word. Right, make a noise if you don't care but you would ditch it in a second if a better option comes along.

I've been analysing people's reasons for disliking the word podcasters and a lot of people say they don't like it because it comes from a brand name iPod.

And it's not even a device people use anymore.

Just going to cut in here to note that the iPod's name was inspired by the film 2001 Space Odyssey and the line

Open the pod bay doors hell.

Later, Apple researched whether iPod was trademarked and found that it had already been in use for a line of internet kiosks in New Jersey that started in 1998 but had been discontinued by 2001.

Prior to that, the trademark had been used in 1991 by a Michigan based furniture company.

Who knows whether either of these companies were also inspired by 2001 or Space Odyssey or pods of dolphins or pea pods.

Since I've already interrupted myself, I'll also say that if you think the word podcasters pushing it but referring to iPod, you are going to see when I tell you about the cast part of it.

That's from broadcast, which originally meant to sow seeds upon the ground.

So in the interest of fairness, I hope you've also been addressing your complaints to broadcasters who have been failing to live up to their agricultural name.
