In a subgenre filled with hideous, gruesome monsters and aliens, sometimes the scariest

thing about sci-fi horror is simply the vast unknowability of the cosmos.

Sci-fi horror author HP Lovecraft tapped into this fear when he wrote about worlds and monsters

beyond human comprehension.

In turn, he pioneered a new kind of subgenre known as Cosmic Horror.

The problem with stories about something too horrific to describe or comprehend is that

it's difficult to translate these into film.

But throughout the last century, many filmmakers have found entertaining and innovative ways

to put Cosmic Horror on screen.

In 1986, indie filmmakers Stuart Gordon adapted an HP Lovecraft short story called From

Beyond, about a mad scientist who finds a window into another world.

A decade later, director Paul Anderson made his own kind of cosmic horror with event horizon

about a crew who reached the outer limits of our solar system and lose all grip on reality.

Hell is only a word, the reality is much, much worse.
