To the late 1980s new innovative filmmakers continue to draw inspiration from 50s classics.

In 1988, a trio of special effects artists called the Kyoto Brothers made their first feature film.

Drawing on 50s horror traditions, it focused on a small American town being invaded by aliens from outer space.

But these aliens also happen to look like terrifying clowns.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, a young New Zealand director called Peter Jackson

had been working on a horror film for four years with his mates, about aliens invading

Wellington and eating human beings.

This tiny budget movie wasn't just a huge breakthrough for its director, but it was also

at the time one of the most grotesque splatter movies ever made.
