By the 1980s, a whole new generation of filmmakers were emerging who had grown up watching

0:29.9

monster movies of the fifties. As such, we got a surge of remakes and reimagining of fifties

0:36.5

classics such as the thing, the fly, and the blob. But other genre filmmakers of the 80s were

0:44.5

drawing on British and European horror of the past. In 1982, director Harry Bromley Davenport

0:52.0

made EXTRO, an alien horror film that owed as much to hammer horror and surreal Italian horror,

0:59.6

as it did American sci-fi. While in 1985, Texas Chantal director Toby Hooper was also taking

1:11.1

direct inspiration from British horror and sci-fi writers like Nigel Neal to direct a bonkers

1:18.3

coke-fueled horror adaptation of 70s British sci-fi novel The Space Vampires.

1:33.3

Join me as we continue exploring the evolution of alien horror and we discuss two schlocky 80s

1:39.6

classics, EXTRO and LIFE FORCE.

1:43.2

1:53.7

If you're tuning in for the first time, then welcome. In this podcast, we explore and dissect

1:58.4

the history and the evolution of the horror genre by looking at a particular sub-jummer as one

2:03.3

series at a time. We are currently in our seventh series exploring the evolution of alien,

2:09.3

sci-fi and cosmic horror, and this is part 16. This week's episode is sponsored by $20

2:17.2

Patreon subscriber Eric J. Stone, and in this week's episode, as that intro suggested,

2:22.5

we're going to be looking at two little, I suppose, relatively lesser known 80s gems.

2:28.8

That's EXTRO from 1982 and LIFE FORCE from 1985. Both of these discussions will be spoilerific.

2:37.4

I would urge you guys to watch both these movies before listening to our discussion,

2:42.7

because these discussions really won't make any sense if you haven't seen the films. Plus,

2:47.3

these movies are absolute bangers both need to be seen to be believed. So joining me to discuss

2:53.4

these two schlocky 80s classics, well, who else was going to get to join me for these two movies?
