Summary

“I ran away. I will be back. I swear. I’m sorry.” Jessica Nuñez awoke on the morning of September 15, 2019 and found that note in her daughter Alicia’s room. Alicia Navarro’s 15th birthday was only five days away, but she was gone. Alicia wasn’t the type of kid to run away. She had social anxiety and liked to keep her inner circle closed. So who could have convinced her to leave her Glendale, Arizona home in the middle of the night? Jessica fears that the answers surrounding her daughter’s disappearance may lie in her daughter’s secret online activities.

In this episode, we also talk to our 13-year-old kids about staying safe online and what they think may have happened to Alicia.

0:06.3	released, I got an email from a listener that I thought was really interesting. Now, we always strive to
0:12.7	do the best that we can in terms of sensitivity and language and things like that. And it turns out
0:17.8	that we did get a few things wrong here. In this episode, we refer to
0:21.4	Alicia Navarro as high functioning. Now, this was a descriptor that had been used in a lot of the
0:27.2	news articles that I read. And because this case was so recent, it didn't occur to me to really
0:34.9	think about that language and whether or not it was up to date. Turns out it's not.
0:39.6	As our listener, Kennedy said, quote, the distinction between high functioning and low functioning
0:44.8	is really just whether or not the person is verbal or nonverbal. And the functioning label is more
0:49.6	of a value judgment. So verbal slash nonverbal is a better way to describe autistic people. And that makes
0:56.4	complete sense to me. So that's number one. And number two is we briefly mentioned Asperger
1:03.9	syndrome, which actually is not an official diagnosis anymore. The scientist who was named after
1:10.0	actually has some like creepy Nazi ties as well.
1:13.0	It's a whole thing. But the point is is that Asperger's is no longer a diagnosis. So we aren't
1:19.3	using it. So I do apologize for that. I just wanted to clear that up because, you know,
1:23.8	you may not have known either. And I think learning things is fun. But for now,
1:28.9	let's get into this week's episode about the disappearance of Alicia Navarro.
