Hey everyone, it's Kona here. I just wanted to pop in before we start this episode because after it was

released, I got an email from a listener that I thought was really interesting. Now, we always strive to

do the best that we can in terms of sensitivity and language and things like that. And it turns out

that we did get a few things wrong here. In this episode, we refer to

Alicia Navarro as high functioning. Now, this was a descriptor that had been used in a lot of the

news articles that I read. And because this case was so recent, it didn't occur to me to really

think about that language and whether or not it was up to date. Turns out it's not.

As our listener, Kennedy said, quote, the distinction between high functioning and low functioning

is really just whether or not the person is verbal or nonverbal. And the functioning label is more

of a value judgment. So verbal slash nonverbal is a better way to describe autistic people. And that makes

complete sense to me. So that's number one. And number two is we briefly mentioned Asperger

syndrome, which actually is not an official diagnosis anymore. The scientist who was named after

actually has some like creepy Nazi ties as well.

It's a whole thing. But the point is is that Asperger's is no longer a diagnosis. So we aren't

using it. So I do apologize for that. I just wanted to clear that up because, you know,

you may not have known either. And I think learning things is fun. But for now,

let's get into this week's episode about the disappearance of Alicia Navarro.
