Design research was the unlikely name of the pioneering home furnishing store that helped bring

modern European design into the American household.

Design research is also the name of a new book about this store and its legacy.

One of the book's authors is none other than Jane Thompson, the legendary designer, urban planner, and editor, who along with design research founder Benjamin

Thompson, created the store's unique and influential aesthetic.

This is just one chapter in a career that recently led to Jane's winning the Cooper Hewitt Lifetime Achievement Award.

Her co-author is Alexandra Lange, an architectural historian, journalist, and critic, whose work appears often on the website

Design Observer and in the New York Times and Metropolis magazine.
