Summary

On Saturday, February 5th, my daughter, Alexa, drove to the gym after completing a week in the externship of her dreams. She was just a few months shy of graduation to become an ultrasound technician. She had committed to a physical health routine months ago and was in the best shape of her life. She was living apart from her husband Mitch for the first time as he completed his final semester of college. Upon graduation, Mitch was planning on taking the MCAT in May. They had worked hard and sacrificed a lot to get to this point in their early lives in hopes that they would both be in a position to help others for the remainder of their lives. And then, in an instant, their lives would be altered forever. A large truck ran a red light and t-boned Alex in her Mini Cooper, throwing the car over 100 feet into a nearby field. Her injuries have been nothing short of devastating. Alex, Mitch, my wife Wendy, and I discuss the impact of this devastating change on their lives and the effect that tragedy can have on the extended family, and how one event can significantly alter the future that someone had worked so hard to make a reality. 0:03.6	It's the one where your son-in-law tells you that your daughter has been in a terrible car accident and has been rushed to a trauma center.
0:11.3	And it's the call that it absolutely brings you to your knees.
0:14.2	It rips your heart out.
0:15.3	It causes your mind to go places that you never, ever want to go, never thought that you would have to go.
0:20.9	And on February 5th, we got that dreaded phone call and for everybody involved,
0:25.1	our lives were forever changed at that very moment, but none more than our beautiful,
0:29.7	kind-hearted, and devoted daughter Alex.
0:32.7	Alex was a 23-year-old student of sonography, and she was living and attending school in Arizona,
0:38.1	less than six months away from graduation, when she got T-boned in the middle of an intersection
0:43.2	by a Ford F-150 truck. The driver of the truck ran a red light and struck Alex in her
0:48.6	mini-cooper as she entered the intersection on a green light, and her car spun out, and it was
0:53.2	thrown over 100 feet into a field
0:55.6	off on the side of the road. And unfortunately, the driver of the truck wasn't hurt and was able to walk
1:00.5	away from the accident with nothing but a scratch on his leg. But unfortunately, he didn't have a
1:05.6	valid driver's license and was extremely underinsured. And at the scene of the accident, while
1:09.9	her daughter was fighting for
1:11.1	her life, he was issued a ticket for a red light violation and a ticket for not having a driver's
1:15.8	license and was offered traffic school to clear the tickets from his record. Our daughter, after
1:20.7	being unresponsive at the crash site, was rushed to the hospital trauma center, where doctors
1:25.8	would discover that she had bleeding on the brain.
