Hi everybody, from Wondery, welcome to another episode of Tides of History.

I'm Patrick Weiman, thanks for joining me.

So as many of you know, I got my start in history podcasting by talking about the end

of the Roman Empire.

That's what my first show, cleverly entitled, if I do say so myself, the fall of Rome was

about, it's what some of the early episodes of Tides of History covered and going further

back, that's what I did my doctoral research on.

I'm still fascinated by that period, by the sheer upheaval, by the characters involved,

and what it can tell us about today's world.

So that's one of so many reasons that I'm excited to talk to our guests today.

He's an associate professor at St. Louis University and the author of several books, have

really fond memories of reading through his book on Rome's Port of Ostea and Late Antiquity

for an early episode of Tides, what seems like a very, very long time ago now.

He's got a new book coming out very shortly entitled, Alleric the Goth, an outsider's

history of the fall of Rome, which I found to be an absolutely delightful and informative

read.

I highly recommend it to you.

He's joining us today from Austin, Texas, where he's been a visiting researcher at the

University of Texas for this past year.
