Here's your closing bell brief for Wednesday, October 15th. I'm Catherine Sullivan for the Wall Street Journal.

U.S. stocks finished mostly higher today, but paired earlier gains that were driven by another round

of strong bank earnings. The S&P 500 was up 0.4%, and the tech-heavy NASDAQ rose 0.7%, while the Dow Jones Industrial average ended nearly flat.

Chipmakers helped lift the NASDAQ, following news of a $40 billion deal for a private

data center operator. Meanwhile, gold prices jumped, and treasury yields fell.

Among individual companies, shares of Bank of America gained about 4 percent, and

Morgan Stanley stock jumped nearly 5 percent after both Wall Street firms reported earnings and

revenue that beat expectations. The insurer Progressive saw its stock tumble 6 percent after

its earnings came in weaker than anticipated, and shares of ASML, a Dutch maker of chipmaking equipment, rose 3% as it reported better than expected orders,

citing high demand for tools to power artificial intelligence.
