It's the first part in the series

and marks the beginning of the transient butcher's

reign of terror in the Midwest of the early 1900s.

Each episode will not only explore the killer's horrific crimes, but will explore the effect

that he had on the small railroad towns of the region, especially the town of

Veliska, Iowa. Hold the curtains tight, hide the axe in the barn, and get ready

for the next part of murdering a beds. You're going to be. On the morning of June 11th, 1912, the Bloodhounds arrived in Volliska.

Investigators who were still at the scene discovered a heel print on a magazine that had been tossed on the floor of a closet and immediately suspected for no other reason that the killer might have hid there.

The dogs were brought into the house and allowed to sniff around in the

closet as a starting place. There were dozens of people on hand at daybreak as they

watched them take off on a trail that led them toward the Nottaway River. County Attorney Ratliff and Sheriff Jackson organized search parties made up of national guardsmen and volunteers

to scour both sides of the river, but they turned up no clues.

Among the bystanders that morning was Frank Jones.

Rumors spread that he told someone standing next to him that the dogs were, quote,

going in the wrong direction.
