And the In 1929 Gerald Holland wrote in American Mercury magazine,

whatever Odium may be attached to beer in other parts of the Republic,

its status in St Louis is as firmly grounded as James Ees its span across the Mississippi.

Beer made St. Louis.

And he was right.

Beer was indeed the lifeblood of St. Louis,

and the empires rose and fell because of the public's taste for a well-crafted brew.

The Limp family came to prominence in the middle 1800s as one of the premier brewing families of St. Louis.

For years, they were the fiercest rival of Anheuser-Busch

and the first makers of Logger Beer in the Midwest,

but today they're largely forgotten as actual people.

They're more remembered today for the mansion they built than for the beer they once

brewed. They've been reduced to roles as spooky characters in a horror story rather than

as the living, breathing personalities that shape the history of the city.

The history of the Limp family is a true American tragedy.

It's one of triumph over opposition, hard work, perseverance, genius and madness, eccentricity and passion, horror, death and soul. and hundreds and early 1900s. It's also the story of the beer industry in St Louis,

the German immigrant experience, and a riveting look at the lives and deaths for

those from whom money was truly no object. In 1926 author F Scott Fitzgerald wrote,

Let me tell you about the very rich. They're different from you and me.

Fitzgerald may not have been writing about the Limp family,

but he could have been.
