It's the media buzz meter with Howard Kurtz.

As we wobble in the post-game punditry about Donald Trump's State of the Union, I think back to how this all started.

That is the spectacle of the people, you know, being in the audience and being recognized by the president,

by multiple presidents. And really goes back more than 40 years to Ronald Reagan. I remember this

vividly because I was one of two reporters covering just absolute tragedy as lots of other

journalists were feeding in information after an air Florida jet crashed into the 14th Street bridge.

If you're not familiar with the geography, it's a very tight turn where as you're going down, it looks like you're going into the water and then the runway comes into play.

And so almost all the people on board were killed, but there were five survivors who were

clinging to, in those frigid waters, clinging to a wing. And a government employee took off his jacket,

went out and pulled one of these women to safety.

His name was Lenny Scutnik.

Absolute hero.

Courageous thing to do.

And when Reagan had his state of the union that year,

he obviously recognized Lenny Scutnik.

And that just changed the, you know,

changed the choreography of these things.

So that's a little background music there for you.

I guess I need to, you know, I was actually just got curious.

I did a little research about like when did presidents start giving the address to Congress?

Because George Washington did it.

First joined session, 1790 in New York.
