We planned this to the point podcast for the day after the senatorial election in Alabama, our subject, the future of the Republican Party.

Talk about timing.

We did not expect the Democrat, Doug Jones, to upset the Republican former judge Roy Moore, any more than anybody else did.

But that's what happened.

So what's next for the GOP now, not just in Alabama, which is hardly a typical state, but nationwide.

Are some Republicans actually relieved?

Do Roy Moore's moral failings mean trouble ahead for President Trump?

And what's the possible impact on next year's elections for the Senate and Congress?

We have a panel of five guests, including Republicans with very different opinions,

as well as historians and political commentators.

Let's start by getting some context from Jacob Hacker, Professor of Political Science at Yale.

He's author of American Amnesia, how the war on government led us to forget what made America prosper. Good to have

you on our program. Thanks so much for having me on, Warren. Now, you said that the election,

which occurred the day before we're doing this program, that the Republicans ought to have to pay a price.

What did you mean by that?

Well, I think they have paid that price.

And what I meant was that for not standing up strongly against Roar and more, they really should be held accountable.

And they were, though I think, you know they really should uh... be held accountable and

they were uh... though i think you know in many ways it was the bravery of a few

republicans who spoke out most notably

uh... richard shelby of alabama the sitting senator uh... who is not up for

...
