We turn our attention with the election in mind to Afghanistan, to al-Qaeda, ISIS, and a man named

Saraj Doudin Akane, a very powerful man with a black beard, who is the subject of a recent New York Times profile at length.

He's also the subject, this profile, of a Generation Jihad podcast, which I recommend on Long

War Journal.

Bill keeps the Long War Journal with his colleagues.

Conversation with Tom Jocelyn and Will Silber about the profile of the

Hakane senior figure, the black-bearded one. Bill, a very good evening to you. I did not see this

until you and Tom and Will gave attention to it. Who is Sarajuddin Hakani right now? Good evening, John. Yes, and this

is one of those news stories that shouldn't have been buried, but we are, of course, at the cusp of an

election, and that's all that people seem to care about. Sarjuddin Hakani or Saraj.

He is the son of the famed Taliban leader, Jalaloudin Hakani, fought against the Soviets that helped the Taliban establish its first Islamic State, served in a senior position for the Taliban, helped Osama bin Laden come.

You know, he's one of the sponsors for Osama bin Laden to come to Afghanistan.

Jalaloud and the father sheltered bin Laden after 9-11 and told the world, we will not give up Osama bin Laden no matter what.

Mullah Omar, the head of the Taliban, said the same exact thing, despite the revisionist

history that you'll see in the New York Times piece.

And his son, Siraj, is one of many sons of Jalal Udin, but he is the heir to Jalal Udun,

who died of old age.

And I want to say it was 2017, 2018 timeframe.

But before that, the U.S. first put out a reward for him, I believe it was around $75,000 in 2007.
