I'm Mary Meckley and I welcome you back to day two of our seven part series we are exploring this week all about mental balance with the wisdom of the ancient Greek Stoics. I am coming to you from Greece as I record this series and I happen to be in Athens and I

had the chance to visit the actual Stoa or meeting place in the Agora, a big gathering place where different philosophers would share their

teachings with their students and so I was able to visit the Stoa of Zeno.

so I wasn't able to wander through it, but I was able to be right next to it and view it and take a look at it.

And these are really fascinating places along the ancient Agora, which is of course in ruins now,

but you can still see where the different philosophers met and shared their

teachings. And what I notice about the Stoics is that they believed that when you lived a virtuous life and I'll be starting you off on the virtues,

the four fundamental virtues of the Stoics tomorrow and you'll continue that through

this week's series.

To get you started, I want to share with you the premise of the four virtues of the Stoics.

The virtues are prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance.

And these virtues were emphasized

as a way for you will

the best person you could possibly be

not so much for yourself

so that you will have a better life, so that you will be happier,

but rather so that you could make the world a better place. So by following these virtues,

the Stoics believed that you would find the answers within you.

Regardless of whatever trial you may face, you will be able to have this sense of emotional balance to

manage stress and anything that comes your way.

When you focus on cultivating virtues within yourself. You know what to do. The answers are there.
