Summary

I talk to music legend, political rock star, and one of my heroes, Billy Bragg about the three dimensions of freedom: liberty, equality, and accountability. We also talk flat earthers, Marianne Williamson, the Billy Bragg songs I used to sing to my abusive ex-bf and more. This is an amazing and healing episode for me, and I know it will enliven you too. Hi, this is against everyone with Connor Abeeb. A weekly podcast featuring my conversations with

0:06.2

countercultural figures and presenting complex, philosophical, spiritual, and political ideas in an

0:12.1

engaging and accessible way, with the hope of inspiring these kinds of conversations in your own

0:18.1

life. I cannot tell you how excited I am for this episode

0:23.5

with a legendary figure in both music and activism, Billy Bragg.

0:29.8

You probably know Billy Bragg from his decades spanning career in music,

0:35.7

and also you may know him as a social, labor, political activist. His

0:43.4

new effort, his newest effort is a book called The Three Dimensions of Freedom. And we spend

0:48.9

a lot of time talking about that book and talking about his concepts of liberty, equality, and accountability. I ask him,

0:58.0

why not fraternity instead of accountability. We go into what each of those concepts mean to him.

1:06.8

The problems with the freedom of speech, which is a pretty interesting angle, I think, for someone whose

1:18.8

on the freedom of speech, where the limits of that are and where the problems of that might be.

1:24.7

We also talk about compassion, why a break from the language of Marxism might be

1:30.5

needed. So that might be surprising to some of you because Billy often talks in very socialist

1:36.8

terms and things about unions and socialism and all that kind of stuff. For me, this has a very

1:43.6

personal aspect to it, too, which I talk about

1:47.2

in the show because of the way some of Billy's music has woven into my life in a rather

1:52.2

actually sorrowful way as much as I enjoy it. And in some ways, this episode and this conversation

1:58.5

I got to have with him redeemed all of that for me.

2:02.8

And so it was almost kind of a healing act.

2:06.3

So I'm very excited to have Billy on the show.
