Friends, the question that I keep hearing is, what is to be done?

That old political economy question that comes up whenever we find ourselves in

desperate predicaments, like the ones that we are either involved in or bearing witness to all over the world today.

And the truth is, in answer to this question, there is nothing to be done about the situation.

Not directly. Instead, we need to access a strength, a force, which is, in fact, a saving force.

In a time when we are confronted with cruelty and destruction for destruction's sake,

we need to create for creation's sake.

The counteracting force for this cruelty and destruction is not the

stopgap of resistance, however necessary that may be, but the creation of good. In other words,

art, the force that is always offering us the possibility of something totally new springing into existence.

People tend to think of art as either something that helps or abuts business, or as a hobby,

or as an ornament to the political realm, the realm which people mostly consider real

these days. But art isn't any of that. Art isn't even a product. Art, the word comes from the root,

which means fit together. What is being fitted together? It is the spiritual world and the apparent world.

Art is the skill of joining together the realm of the angels and the realm of incarnation.

Actually, I'll say it's something more than a skill. It is a force. What I mean is that when we create art,

we alter our consciousness so that we are in touch with the spiritual realm,

the realm of metaphors and images,

of crazy movements, wild colors,

different forms of time, new words, new sounds. And we grab it, we grab something from

that realm of total potentiality and we pull it into the physical. We limit it. We kill it by
