well who could forget that iconic scene from the

1989 film Pet Cemetery based on the book by Stephen King, where one of the characters is

tormented by her sister Zelda, who she was charged to take care of.

It's a scene that is given plenty of people nightmares and is lodged in the imagination

of so many of us as a sense of caretaking horror or a body horror, the horror of shame.

Great, because right now I'm in the middle of a series of episodes covering my favorite genre,

horror, with some of its greatest creators, this time John Langan and Sophie White.

The series coincides with the paperback release of my novel, Hawk Mountain.

There are few genres that have inspired such a furor of regulation, stigma, and anger as horror.

It's regulated by governments.

It's been the topic of moralistic examinations and moral panics, it's been blamed

for disintegrating societies and more. Horror itself horrifies. And when horror does become

accepted, it is at best said by its critics to transcend the genre, which really just

means it's transcending the stigma that the critics have put there
