Friends, I've spoken a lot this year about what we need to move beyond to meet the challenges of our time

and the challenges of the future and how to thrive and flourish.

All the early episodes of this year were part of a series called How to Live Beyond,

where I talked about

traditions and techniques and self-help stuff, spiritual stuff that I thought had really

important lessons to impart to us, but that we could linger in too much or wallow in and

could drive us deeper into our problems. That included

stuff like manifestation, abundance, money, magic kind of stuff, sorcery casting spells,

entheogens, lucigenic drugs, wellness, and more. But what should we move towards? I didn't talk about that directly. I mean, it came up on all

those episodes, but I didn't do this kind of coherent bringing together of a path, especially in

terms of spirituality. And another thing I didn't talk about on those How to Live Beyond episodes was what

all of those things I said we need to move beyond had in common, and that is materialism.

And as someone whose politics are most deeply aligned with the left, spirituality is basically

missing. And where it arises, if it's not outright attacked or laughed at

or ridiculed, it is generally subjugated to being part of the political economy.

That is to say, it's understood as rising out of material conditions, not something embracing,

holding, and expressing materiality, or even that it could just be

metaphorical or just kind of a another self-help sort of move, which is in a way just a kind of covert

way of dismissing it all or laughing at it all or mocking it all or just being like, well, yeah,

that's kind of secondary.

So perhaps I should have included forms of materialistic politics in that How to Live Beyond series,
