Hi, this is Against Everyone with Connor Habib, and I'm going to start this episode talking about therapy,

because that's what this episode is about. My guest is Charlotte Fox Weber, who is the psychotherapist

and the author of What We Want, A Journey Through Twelve of Our Deepest Desires. And it was that book that

inspired me to have Charlotte on.

I've had a sort of weird life, maybe you have two, of traipsing through different therapist's

offices and analyst's rooms. I was a teenager. I can't remember how old, somewhere 13 to 16, somewhere in between there,

when my mom sent me to therapy for the first time, so thanks, mom. And I remember the therapist

asking me what I wanted. What did I want out of my life? And I said, I want to fall in love.

I want to be in love.

And the reason why I remember saying that

is because he was shocked.

He said, oh my gosh, nobody your age ever says that.

He said, they say they want a car,

they want a career, they want to go to Princeton

or something like that.

But they don't say that they want to fall in love.

I was shocked that other people didn't say that.

Perhaps it's true that not a lot of people say that at that age, but they're thinking it

or they're feeling it.

But I knew that there was a kind of a loneliness and also sense of pride around what I had

said.

And I have to say that that blend of loneliness and pride has sort of mixed together in many
