engaging and accessible way. Well, friends, what an honor to be able to present an episode with

the, well, let's just say scientific genius, James Lovelock, creator of the

Gaia theory.

If you know anything about me, you'll know that my main mentor in life was the geoscientist

and biologist Lynn Margulies, who co-created Gaia and developed the Gaia theory with James Lovelock.

And for all the time that I studied with her and was close to her for years after, I was done

with school and talked about, Jim was always just sort of looming in the background of all those

conversations, but I had never met Jim. And this Guyan idea, the Gaia hypothesis now, I think more correctly called the Gaia theory,

has been very influential on me and the way I organize my thinking.

And of course it's also been profoundly influential on science, biology,

geoscience, climate science, all that. I studied with Lynn for years, and in fact, this

episode with Jim is coming out the day after Lynn's 10th death anniversary.

So Lynn died on November 22nd of 2011,

and this episode is coming out on November 23rd, 2021.
