On this episode, I welcome back the incomparable Mona El-Tahawi,

feminist, Muslim, anarchist, author of Headscarves and Hyman's, Why the Middle East

Needs a Sexual Revolution, and now Seven Necessary Sins for Women and Girls.

In 2018, Mona and I did episode 50 of Against Everyone with Connor Abeeb, and it was a really

important episode for me.

Mona and I had known each other a little bit before then,

but it was just such a gratifying and deep conversation

that changed the podcast for me,

not only because it brought so many new listeners

and not even only because it ended up being

featured in a museum exhibition, but rather because it showed me how important it was for me

to go deep right away and to recognize that some of the things that I might have been scared

to talk about were some of the

most important things to discuss. See, because Mona's presence really enlivened and strengthens

the presence of her comrades and collaborators. This episode is no different nor any less

challenging. We find ourselves working around ideas that in some

ways we see differently, but in alliance with one another. So it's a very nuanced discussion going

into corners we don't often think about. How should we consider masks, for example? I find

this a very interesting question to ask somebody who wrote many essays

on veiling and covering the face and the head in the forms of the nukub and the burqa and the hijab.
