The decision-makers Stavridis profiles range from the American Revolutionary War to the present day, for example: Doris “Dorie” Miller, was the first Black American awarded the Navy Cross after he bravely remained on a sinking ship at Pearl Harbor to help his crewmates. Rear Admiral Michelle Howard, whose ability to simultaneously delegate authority yet bear full responsibility was instrumental in the 2009 rescue of Captain Richard Phillips from Somali pirates.
