Summary

In Episode #56, I sat down with gastroenterologist Dr Alan Desmond to talk about restoring and maintaining good digestive health with healthy eating habits. With digestive health issues such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), coeliac disease, and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) on the rise globally, understanding how to take control of your own gut health is enormously important. This episode is full of scientific evidence to support health eating habits, including specific studies on IBD and a whole-food, plant-based diet. Find out what foods Alan recommends his patients and the general population eat more and less of, and how the typical western diet compares to the optimal diet for good gut health. We discussed a whole host of topics, including various mainstream eating trends (such as paleo and keto), lectins and the ‘Plant Paradox’, probiotics and prebiotics, and much more. It’s a jam-packed episode, friends, and I recommend listening with a notepad on hand. For more insights and reflections, visit The Proof website for the full show notes. Enjoy, friends. I can think of just two examples already this year. Elderly ladies who've come into hospital

0:46.2

with pneumonia, so they've got a chest infection, it's really common in the elderly unfortunately.

0:51.4

And they were both pretty on well with their pneumonia, but then they got really sick

0:55.5

because it turned out they had liver cirrhosis. And when you have liver cirrhosis and you

0:59.6

become on well, you can get really on well because you don't have that reserve to cure the

toxins out of your system. And we're used to seeing that in patients with alcohol problems.

1:08.7

But now we're seeing it in lovely little old ladies who come in with pneumonia and we

1:12.7

do our scans, we say, well, you've got cirrhosis of the liver where you've explained to

their family members and there's one she hasn't touched. A drop of alcohol in her life,

say, well, it's fatty liver disease. It's the same message. Eat a lot of plants, cut

out the meat, cut out the processed food, whole food, plant-based.
