Summary

Christian Hacking’s life swung when he broke his back in a rock-climbing accident. His high-octane lifestyle came to a smashing spinal-cord-severing halt, leaving him wheelchair-bound and grappling with God’s purpose for his life. He tells his story with searing honesty and humour, and still lives life to the full despite severe physical limitations. He’s married a single-mum and they have four children between them. The last eight years have been spent engaged in activism on behalf of the most helpless and vulnerable in society. What a conversation!

I remember running up this mountain and I just fell on my knees and I just said Lord I love you so much.

But six weeks later I find myself at the bottom of a cliff with a broken spine.

People say oh did you lose your faith? And I sometimes say,

0:22.8

yes, I did. I lost my faith in a small god who existed for my happiness. And I gained the faith

0:28.4

in a much bigger God who exists for his glory. Welcome, everybody. This is Simon Gilbeau

with inspired. Oh, I love these times we have together. Listen, if you're new to us, we get relentlessly bombarded, don't we? With bad news in the media that just makes us more cynical and fearful and depressed and anxious. In the Western world, we're riddle with anxiety and fear and that sort of stuff. And what we need is actually an antidote to that is hearing good news. It's hearing stories of people doing fantastic stuff in all sorts of walks of life. And I've got no doubt this week, you're going to be both inspired and challenged as we talk to my friend Christian Hacking. Welcome, Christian. Thanks for having me. It's good to be here. It's so good to have you. Well, listen, guys,

1:11.8

so I first came across Christian, and I let him tell the story. It was back in, and I think about 2009, what's that, 16, 17 years ago, in an airport. He was off to change the world. And subsequently for the last eight years, he's been an activist. Things changed dramatically when he had a serious climbing accident.

1:28.8

And yet it hasn't stopped him living life to the full.

1:31.1

He's... is he's been an activist. Things changed dramatically when he had a serious climbing accident.

1:28.8

And yet it hasn't stopped him living life to the full. He's married, he's got four beautiful

children. And I think I'll stop there, Christian. Let's go right back. How did you come to faith?

1:38.9

How did I come to faith? Ah, okay, right. So I got brought up in a non-Christian home, despite my

1:43.0

name being Christian.

1:52.5

I was named after the South African general, Hans Christian Smuts, who's one of the lesser-known statues in Parliament Square.

1:55.5

But I came to faith around the age of 14.

2:06.1

This was following a kind of period in my life, I had this anxiety for a few years about, it was actually to do, specifically to do nuclear war.

2:08.7

And I was resting with this idea, what happens if we just all get wiped out?

2:13.1

And it was causing me a huge amount of anxiety.

2:15.5

And I remember there was an ex-Marine who was working at the prep school that I was educated at, and he explained to me the nuclear defence shield, which when you know the details, is hardly comforting. And there was a chaplain, an amazing man called Richard Pesker, in the room. And he was listening to this conversation. And then

2:35.0

once the Royal Marine had finished his spiel, the chaplain opened up Psalm 18 to me and said, well,

2:41.1

do you know, there's a God who describes himself as a rock, as a fortress, as a salvation, as a
