Summary

We’ve gotten a lot of emails at Headspace HQ about healthy habits and routines. Right now, it can feel challenging to control your environment, but today, we challenge you to instead focus on what’s going on inside. When you’re able to notice a thought, you can respond calmly, clearly, with intention rather than react emotionally. Learn more about your ad choices. Hi, Sandy here and welcome to Radio Headspace. So it's Tuesday morning and I don't know if

0:17.5

you've been able to get any exercise in today. I don't know if you've been able to eat

0:21.4

as you would like to today. One of the things that surprised me over these last few months

0:26.2

of shutdown, of lockdown in so many different countries is just how many emails we've had

0:30.8

into Headspace. About how to instill a healthy routine, how to not fall out of a healthy

0:38.1

routine? It's interesting because very often the focus is on the thing itself. So for example,

0:44.1

I mean I cannot tell you how many emails we've had in saying how do I deal with working

0:49.6

in the same place, the same environment as my fridge where all that food is. I find myself

0:54.9

getting up and down from my desk all day long. Or how can I even think about exercising

1:00.7

when I'm in the same space that I sleep and that I'm working? It just doesn't feel right.

1:08.2

It's interesting that we focus on the food perhaps or on the exercise rather than

1:14.2

necessarily what's going on in our mind. Let me give some context around that. So let's say we're

1:20.3

thinking about exercising. Now for me like I try and get out my stuff the night before so I'm

1:26.2

more likely to just be able to kind of use it first thing in the morning. But let's say the alarm

1:30.3

goes off. I wake up, I open my eyes and the thought arises in my mind. I don't feel like running

1:35.4

today. Now in that moment, if I took that thought seriously, I would end up not running. I would

1:41.8

perhaps think, huh actually I'm a little bit tired. Yeah, I could do the rest. I would be nice

1:47.1

just maybe have a quieter, slower start to the day. And all of a sudden from that very first thought

1:53.6

which I didn't bring to mind, it simply came to mind. I've created a scenario in which I'm not

1:58.9

following through the exercise. The exercise at this point was almost immaterial. It was what was

2:05.2

happening in the mind prior to that. In the same way, let's say we're sitting in front of some food.

2:10.8

I mean the food doesn't leap off the plate and into our mouth. There is a decision. There's
