Hello it's Antries and welcome to the savvy painter podcast. This week I'd like to introduce you to the abstract painter Brian Ruttenberg or maybe he's a landscape painter. I'm not sure so you can decide.

Brian is originally from South Carolina. He received his BFA from the College of Charleston and his MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

I think you're really going to enjoy this conversation.

Brian talks about his idea that in the big picture art fails us. It is lifeless and incomplete he says.

What? Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, when I heard Brian say that, I'll admit that I had a split second of judgment, you know, like someone

had just insulted the love of my life and I needed to come to defend my love.

But what Brian goes on to say is really quite beautiful and it illustrates

the role of the artist in this dance with our canvas. Brian also shares his idea that art is part skill and part insanity. I loved

diving down that rabbit hole and it brought us into conversations about skill, spontaneity, and the difference between making and creating.

Then we talk about Brian's painting rituals, his family life, and how that inspires his work.

Can you tell me a little bit about how you got going painting?

I think you have a really interesting story because I've been watching some of your videos. Just give a little backstory of when you started really

applying yourself to painting in the sense that you're like, this is my thing, I'm going to do this,

and I'm going to make my living off of it.

I was born and raised in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and there wasn't any specific

moment where I decided that I was a painter.
