I'm Ellie Corthorne. In today's podcast, we're speaking about the lives and experiences of Aboriginal Australians after the arrival of white settlers in the 18th century.

My guest was the historian Richard Broome, an expert in the history of indigenous peoples,

whose book Aboriginal Australians, A History Since 1788, was published in its fifth edition in 2019.

You've spent much of your career researching the experiences of Aboriginal people after the arrival of white settlers in Australia.

So I think before we go any further, can you just tell us how many Aboriginal people lived in Australia when the Europeans

arrived? And what kind of groups of people does that term Aboriginal encompass?
