I'm Mick Garrus, and this is Postmortem.

Let's talk about the relationship between horror fiction and horror movies.

In the beginning, even back to the silent era,

the most popular and renowned horror films were based on popular novels.

Witness Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the phantom of the opera,

and the hunchback of Notre Dame, to name a few.

In the 1930s, fright films actually became a genre under their own for the first time.

With movies based on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein,

Graham Stoker's Dracula,

H.G. Wells, The Invisible Man, and Countless Others.

Though not all of the horror classics from the dawn of the genre

were based on books, the vast majority of memorable ones were.

But as time progressed, the genre became much more cinematic

and stories were fashioned that could only be films
